NDVI imagery can be used to classify land use based on the productivity (e.g. pasture and crop growth) of vegetation within a target area. Although vegetation growth is influenced by rainfall and moisture availability(See NSW NDVI vs RAINFALL 1999-2018) – other factors such as temperature, sunlight, soil depth and type, nutrient status, drainage, aspect, slope and elevation also have an affect.
By analysing NDVI imagery in a target area land users are able to determine the cause of the variation (field investigations, soil tests) and develop suitable, targeted, management strategies for that particular area.
Historical NDVI imagery of the FORBES LGA, taken during the peak of the growing season (dry-land agriculture)– late August to early October – (See FORBES Climate Graph)from 1999 until 2016, has been analysed to determine the extent and type of farming practices undertaken throughout the FORBES LGA.
